Six steps you can take to help search engines find and index your content You’re trying to get your website noticed and search engines are an excellent channel for visibility. In this article, we’ll look at some basic things you can do to make sure your content is being indexed by search engines. The more of the items you can implement below, the more noticeable your site will be to the search engines. 1. Check your “Robots.TXT” file One little line of code in a simple txt file can be very costly if it’s blocking your site from search engines. A robots.txt file allows you to tell search engines to crawl or not crawl certain directories or files in your site. For example, this simple line of code disallows all crawlers (a.k.a. robots): User-agent: * Disallow: / To find your robots.txt file simply type in your domain followed by /robots.txt. For example, here is the robots.txt file for the W3C: www.w3.org/robots.txt . For more details on what can be in this file and how search engines treat it visit robotstxt.org . 2. Make sure your content is indexable Although search engines have come a long way over the years in terms of indexing all kinds of content on the web, there are still some types of content that may not be fully indexed or not indexed at all.

SuperMedia (formerly Idearc) is launching a new version of its Super Guarantee ad campaign and extending the program, which is now one year old. The program is only available to SuperMedia advertisers, but offers consumer benefits as follows: If a consumer is not satisfied with the service provided by a participating SuperGuarantee business, SuperMedia will work to resolve any issues or, if unable to resolve the issue SuperMedia will reimburse the consumer up to $500 of the cost of labor for the service. The company recently expanded the program to its EveryCarListed automotive vertical: Building on the success of the SuperGuarantee program, SuperMedia’s new SuperGuarantee AutosSM program provides a free powertrain limited warranty that covers many automotive components including the engine, valves, bearings, pumps, transmission and drive axle up to $3,000 for consumers who find and purchase qualified vehicles through EveryCarListed.com® or Superpages.com®. Previously when I spoke with SuperMedia , as the company emerged from bankruptcy earlier this year, CEO Scott Klein he said that Super Guarantee was helping to drive retention and usage in the print directory: We’ve seen meaningful spikes in registrations and healthy improvement in possession and usage.” He said that the company uses Gallup to measure possession and usage and that in “90% of measured markets; possession and usage are up in double digits.” Klein added that call tracking numbers indicate increased call volumes from the print directory.

People may be more honest on Facebook these days, but we still don’t trust them. MediaPost reports that an ARAnet study shows social media and search engine recommendations coming out tied among the general population—but search engine recommendations leap out in front among affluent (> $75,000/yr—49%) and younger adults (25-34—50% vs. 31% for social media). However, the general consensus was that personal advice from friends or family members was tops, with 59% rating it as important in influencing their buying decisions. But to me, that sounds like a completely different dynamic—are we supposed to be measuring the influence of people we know vs. strangers vs. corporate messages, or are we measuring what medium is more influential? If your mom delivers her advice via your Facebook wall, are you less likely to take it than if she told you in a phone call? Is it surprising that most people trust people they know, who know them and their preferences, than random strangers on search engines or social networks
