And the searches go to…

The Oscars®: glitz, glamor, gossip, gold statuettes, much fanfare — and for many fans, Google search is increasingly a part of watching this live TV experience. Before and during the Academy Awards® broadcast in the U.S., we saw related queries on Google dominating the hot searches list on Google Trends. People searched for the TV schedule, printable ballots for voting on favorites, streaming video sites, nominee and film information, celebrity chatter and whatever else caught your attention. Here’s a snapshot: Fashion Everyone knows the red carpet is all about the gowns. So which actresses made the best (or worst!) dressed list in search? Zoe Saldana ’s purple Givenchy haute couture gown won the day in searches, with just a few more queries than runner up Miley Cyrus , who walked down the carpet in one of Jenny Packham’s finest. Both beat searches for Sandra Bullock ’s dress (Marchesa) by large margins. Sarah Jessica Parker , always the fashionista, ranked a distant fourth in Chanel. Certain designers were also popular in search, thanks to the stars who wore (and name-dropped) them. Elie Saab (worn by Anna Kendrick), Armani Prive (Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Lopez) and Marchesa (Sandra Bullock, Vera Farmiga) were all rising trends. Winners Throughout the night Oscar®-related searches rose and fell as nominations were introduced and winners announced. Avatar had the most searches before the ceremony, but as The Hurt Locker received more awards, searches for that film exceeded all others and peaked when it won Best Picture. Precious also had a good run throughout the night. Its peak matched that of “Avatar” during the ceremony: The awards for best actor, best actress and best director are some of the most-anticipated in the program. There was a considerable amount of buzz about Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock and Kathryn Bigelow before last night, and considerable spikes in search volume when they each won.

Wordpress Gives Blogs a “Push”…

Mostly everyone in the Blog Catalog community is aware of the basic rules of blogging; hosts, tags, comment management, etc. Bloggers also know that the lifeline of their blog is the Really Simple Syndication (RSS) tool. It’s what pumps our magical thoughts out into the world for hungry readers to grab and devour. But until recently, RSS could take up to several hours to actually update its feed, which would put bloggers who may want to capitalize on “hot right now” topics behind. Enter PuSH, or to use it’s given name (and my personal favorite) PubSubHubub. What is PuSH? PuSH is being introduced by none other than blogger favorite, Wordpress. The Los Angeles Times reports that this new tool will virtually “push” updates to RSS readers in real time, making new posts immediately available for readers to access content through feeds. This tool will not change the way readers who access blogs by going to their actual site are able to receive updates. Posts to blog sites will be available in real-time as they always have. This tool comes on the tail end of the social networking wave which has boosted access to new content, and created a hunger for instant updates. Sites like Twitter enable links, videos, pictures and of course, random ramblings to be sent and viewed within seconds. Now that same concept is available for the blogging world. How to use the new service For bloggers using Wordpress.com, there’s nothing to do! The service was live March 3rd and it’s in working order behind the scenes

Trackur Shakes Up the Social Media Monitoring Space with a Free Plan

I’m not sure if you know the back story of why I decided to launch social media monitoring tool Trackur . After completing Radically Transparent , I felt like there was a huge void between those that had outgrown Google Alerts and the monitoring tools available at that time. You had Google Alerts (free) then you had services that started at thousands of dollars. Fast forward a couple of years–yes, Trackur is two years old this month–and Trackur has grown to be one of the most popular monitoring tools on the web. So popular in fact, that we’re racking up many agency clients –attracted by our quick, easy, and affordable tools. I digress.

What We Can Take Away From Tiger Woods Press Conference

I thought Tiger Woods’ press conference last week, while well done, was way too late. The story was just starting to die. But I did have a really good take-a-way quote out of the press conference. He said: It’s not what you achieve in life that matters, it’s what you overcome Great quote. In the affiliate world I can’t tell you how many times I have met “Super Affiliates” only later to find out they come from a very rich family and at best have been breaking even or maybe making a little bit of cash. I mean really? This is your big achievement? This week I heard from 5 different ShoeMoney System students who are on pace to make several hundred dollars in only their first month. All of them were just about on the verge of bankruptcy. I know maybe 500 to a thousand dollars a month is not going to impress very many people but getting to know them and hearing their personal stories and seeing them kick ass and overcoming is a lot more impressive to me then someone who was born with a silver spoon in their mouth coasting through life on mommy and daddies fortunes.

Jobs That Will Be Replaced By Social Media

Social media is not a robot. In fact, there could hardly be a more opposing idea to social media than that of robotic automation. I start this post by sharing that because the idea that any job could be “replaced” by social media is contentious idea. There are plenty of market forces displacing people from jobs …

Yahoo and Twitter Announce Partnership

Better late than never is what they say right? Everyone else and their brother have made their deal with Twitter so Yahoo doing so only makes sense. What is interesting is that while this kind of announcement should be a big deal it comes off as sounding a little “after the fact” which, unfortunately, seems to be how Yahoo is perceived more and more these days. To be fair, Yahoo has more properties to tie Twitter into so the deal is likely to be more complex than the “real time search” deals that have been struck with Google and Microsoft. Yahoo’s Yodel Anecdotal blog sings the deal’s praises What does this mean for you? Very soon, you will be able to see your Twitter feed on Yahoo! just as easily as you use Yahoo! to consume all of the other great content you love from across the Web. Through today’s partnership, along with our recently announced Facebook relationship, Yahoo! is giving your online social life wings to help you stay in touch with the people and things you care about most across the Web
