TopRank ran a survey of journalists, reporters and editors on their use of search and social media in 2008. We found 91% use search engines like Google to do their job. 64% use social networks. Published in Jan 2010 , a George Washington University and Cision survey of journalists reports 89% use blogs and 65% use social networks to research stories. As prep for a presentation I’m giving Thursday at Online Marketing Summit on the intersection of SEO, Social Media and PR , I reached out to a few local journalists and industry news contacts and asked for examples of how they used search engines or social media to do story research. Newsrooms are cutting staff and reporters and editors are hard pressed to do more with less. Tools like search engines and social media make available a tremendous amount of information in real-time. The news world is a world of deadlines and it would seem the use of search and social networks to source experts or people/companies that fit a story angle would be ideal. Even respected news organizations like the BBC are encouraging their journalists to embrace social media . This kind of insight is very helpful to understand how companies can make their news content more easily discovered via social web participation, content and optimization. Why is that important? According to TV News Reporter Jason DeRusha , “Private business does a horrible job cataloging their expertise in a manner that’s search engine friendly. This is a real opportunity, as journalists become much more crunched for time, and use search as quick way to identify local experts.” Here are a few examples of how journalists use search engines and social media tools to connect with story subjects. Not all of them are business situations, but are helpful as feedback on where to spend time creating, optimizing and socializing news content. I begin every day at search engine

I’m three weeks into a new 30 day challenge: no iPhone. When I got a Nexus One in December, I spent a few weeks carrying both phones around in the pockets of my jeans. It took a little while to adapt to Android, but I’m very happy with my Nexus One and I don’t plan to go back to the iPhone. Both the iPhone and Android are great operating systems, but it’s important to me that I can write or run the applications I choose on my phone

The partnership which will lead to the blending of the “other search engines” Yahoo and bing, has been given the government seal of approval by both the US Department of Justice and the European Commission. The integration of the two engines will be started immediately and it will take until 2011 before the advertising part of the deal is integrated. It took me awhile but I have become a big evangelist for Facebook. It’s now my primary source of information. I suspect, from looking at the data , that this is true for millions - although I bet most don’t even realize it. Nielsen reports that the average American spends seven hours a month on Facebook - that’s staggering when you think about bounce rates and how mission-oriented web users are. (Note - Nielsen is a client.) The main reason I am digging more into Facebook these days is that, in an age of infinite noise, the site actually helps me manage my attention. What’s more it makes it easier for me to connect with streams I care about from brands, news sources and thinkers like Jeremiah Owyang and Om Malik. I also like the richness of the conversation and how it’s easy to read, navigate and respond. Still, as great as Facebook is, the site has its annoyances. You need to dig in a bit to tweak it. Once you do, however, I find it becomes a really powerful way to manage your attention. Here are three ways I am making Facebook rock my world …. Tune out Inane Updates First, while games are huge on Facebook, I really don’t care about my friends’ gaming activity. It’s been just recently that Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Eric Schmidt of Google both gave their own versions of how the idea of privacy on the Internet was so 20th century. Facebook has faced the music of some serious backlash to their “everything is public stance and just in the past week there has been a considerable amount of controversy surrounding Google Buzz and its own privacy concerns. Google got the official word that they pushed the envelope just far enough to generate the first class action lawsuit about the service by some circling buzzard or a lawyer (Get it? Buzz-ard.) Since Facebook has been under the microscope longer they are getting more advanced in their “return to privacy”. The Facebook blog announced yesterday that there are new controls that are much more granular as it relates to how you share information through Facebook applications. There are now granular privacy options that enable you to personalize the audience for each piece of content you share through applications. Simply select the group of people you want to share with from the drop-down menu near the lock icon on the Publisher on your home page or profile, or the prompts that appear when you share from applications or Facebook Connect websites. Got something that might make your friends laugh but would appall those annoying family members you are connected to on Facebook? Below is a look at how you can keep the information “regionalized’ by sharing only with those that would laugh rather than faint at your exploits. This is definitely a step in a better direction as it applies to controlling your information that you share on Facebook. Of course, the vast majority of Facebook users never read the Facebook blog, pay little attention to notifications and are likely to not even know that this option exists. Don’t think that the Facebook crew isn’t banking on this. They want everything to be as shared as possible. It makes their service more marketable to advertisers and the like. This looks like a classic case of Facebook doing a little CYA so they can say that they offer these privacy options but they can’t control if a user actually uses them. Of course, if that user is just oblivious to the options that’s all the better for Facebook. It’s the “Hey, we warned them!” defense and it’ll probably work
